SATURDAY, JULY 12th - PAST LANDSCAPES No 73

IN BURNLEY’S SHADOW - WORSTHORNE, HURSTWOOD & TOWNLEY

Alight & Return  Burnley Central

An exploration of Burnley’s Pennine Fringes. A guided tour of these ancient settlements which date from Saxon, Tudor and Early Industrial times and an opportunity to visit Townley Hall.

E Walk        6 miles Easy

Walk to the bus station, bus to Worsthorne - 15 minutes (fare extra). Explore Worsthorne then across the fields to Hurstwood, Foxstones Bridge, Brown Hill, Cliviger Laithe, Burnley way, Townley Park, optional visit to Townley Hall (£3.50 entrance fee-bring indoor shoes), Townley Park, Burnley Town Centre.

Picnic Lunch with refreshments available at Townley Hall.

*WAYFARER TICKET: This scratchcard type ticket can be purchased as far in advance of travel as one wishes. It must be validated on the day of use. An Adult Wayfarer currently costs £9.20. Adults’ Wayfarer aged 60+ costs £4.60 (no proof of age required)

Wayfarer tickets must be purchased in advance from manned stations in Greater Manchester, Chorley Station or Clitheroe Interchange, or can be obtained by post from Wayfarer Ticket Sales, GMPTE, Wythenshawe Bus Station, Manchester, M22 5RG. If ordering by post please send a cheque payable to GMPTE

If you can’t buy a Wayfarer before your Rail Rambler date then simply book a Day Return to your destination.

EAST LANCASHIRE COMMUNITY RAIL GUIDED WALKS’ PROGRAMME

The  Guided Walks’ Programme for March to July 2009 is available from manned stations, tourist information centres and Clitheroe Interchange. It also available on the internet at   www.ribblevalleyrail.co.uk   or at       www.dalesrail.com

The next Community Rail Walk will take place on Saturday, July 4th. It will be an 8 mile Moderate walk starting at and returning to Cherry Tree Sta. The walk will explore the countrside around Hoghton, Hoghton Tower and Riley Green.

The walk will begin at 10.45 after the arrival of the trains from Preston & Colne directions.

You should catch the train which leaves Colne at 09.50 & Burnley Central at10.03 or the train which leaves  Blackpool South at 09.44, Preston at 10.20, Bamber Bridge at 10.30, Blackburn at 10.35 & Accrington at 10.19. Passengers from Blackpool Nrth and Poulton should catch the relevant train which connects with the 10.20 Colne train at Preston.Passengers from the Ribble Valley should catch the train which leaves Clitheroe at 09.40 and change at Blackburn.

Book a Day Return to Cherry Tree from all stations.
